Lifelong Learning in Action at the School of Graduate Studies

ISUFST Graduate Students engaged in a hands-on laboratory activity at the Philippine Carabao Center, Calinog, Iloilo, as part of their commitment to experiential learning. ISUFST Partners with DJSMMC For Indigenous People (IP) Linkages

January 17: Benchmarking and policy review consultation meeting on the implementation and establishment of Indigenous People (IP) linkages of Don Jose S. Monfort Medical Center (DJSMMC).

DJSMMC aims to become the first IP-Friendly Hospital in the country, aligning its programs, services, and initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Universal Health Care Act of the Philippines.

Emphasizing the importance of accessible and equitable healthcare for all, DJSMMC plans to establish and deliver culturally sensitive healthcare practices, partnerships with indigenous communities, and policy adjustments to support these initiatives.

In attendance from DJSMMC were Dr. Jann Christian Solis (Medical Officer III), Mr. Earl John Abelieto (Public Health Coordinator), Ms. Mary Claudine Villacastin (Statistician II), and Ms. Lory Palma (Nurse I) and Dr. Jerlyn Pama (Chair of the Ethics and Review Committee) and Prof. John Niño Vinson Crauz (Faculty Member) from ISUFST.

Nurturing Young Fisheries Learners

This Friday, January 17, 2025, the San Joaquin School of Fisheries celebrated a significant milestone with a heartfelt closing ceremony at Social Hall of the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) Main Campus-Tiwi Site. The event honored the achievements of 28 Senior High School students who successfully completed their specialized work immersion programs, with 12 focusing on Fish Processing Technology and 16 on Aquaculture. The rites not only recognized the students’ hard work but also reaffirmed the school’s dedication to shaping skilled professionals for the fisheries industry. In their messages, the graduates expressed gratitude to the institution and pledged to use their expertise to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the fisheries sector, both locally and globally. Hijas Kids explore ISUFST

Troops of curious young learners from Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus, Inc. have embarked on an enriching field trip to the Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Museum and the Brackishwater Marine Station of the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology this Thursday afternoon, January 16, at ISUFST Main Campus-Tiwi Site. Some Grades 4, 5, and 6 pupils, along with the Science Club members and dedicated teachers, experienced firsthand the significance of the fishing industry in our country. By engaging with real-world objects and experiences, their ISUFST visit hopes to foster holistic education that makes learning fun and meaningful. May this adventure boost the young students’ confidence and allow them to step outside their familiar environment, embrace new challenges, and appreciate the science and art of fisheries thru ISUFST.

ISUFST and DLSU wrap up SDG Policy Workshop with Future Policy Forum

Janiuay, Iloilo–The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), in collaboration with De La Salle University (DLSU) J. Robredo Institute of Governance, successfully concluded the three-day seminar-workshop “Shaping Inclusive Futures: An Action Plan for ISUFST’s SDG Policy Center” on December 28, 2024, at Damires Hills Tierra Verde Leisure Farm.

The final day featured Fulbright Visiting Scholar Juliene Porciuncula from North Carolina State University, who shared her research entitled “A Recipe for Reclaiming Filipino Food Identity.” The morning sessions also included Prof. Ian Jayson Hecita, who guided participants through “Action Plan Roadmap for Equity: Envisioning a Policy Center for Women and Children.” Prof. Hecita delved into the nuances of creating an inclusive policy framework, emphasizing data-driven decision-making and stakeholder engagement. His facilitation inspired participants to outline strategic priorities for the proposed policy center, ensuring alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Across all three days, discussions provided academic insights and practical approaches to crafting research papers and policy briefs addressing pressing issues such as teenage pregnancy, violence against women and children (VAWC), disaster risk reduction management (DRRM), and online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC). Using mainly the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) Framework, participants explored data-driven solutions and strategies for effective policy implementation.

Guided by the expertise of governance advocate Dr. Francisco Magno, planning mentor Prof. Eddie Nuque, and research expert Dr. Leonora Angeles of the University of British Columbia (UBC), the workshop concluded with concrete and meaningful steps: publishing impactful research, crafting insightful policy briefs, and preparing for an engaging Policy Forum in March 2025. These initiatives form the foundation for establishing the SDG Policy Center, envisioned as a hub for inclusive governance and sustainable development in Western Visayas and beyond.

“This seminar solidifies ISUFST’s commitment to advancing data-driven and inclusive policies that address local challenges while aligning with global SDG priorities,” said ISUFST President and Program Leader of the Localization of Women and Children’s Policies in Iloilo, Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr.

Project Leader and ISUFST Research and Development Director Dr. Jescel Bito-onon highlighted the activity’s transformative impact: “This workshop is a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing complex societal challenges. The proposed policy center will be a critical platform for translating research into actionable policies that empower communities and safeguard the most vulnerable.”

Once operational, the ISUFST-based SDG Policy Center will focus on developing evidence-based strategies to empower women, protect children, and foster equitable development. Workshop participants committed to contributing research publications and policy recommendations that will guide the center’s future initiatives.

ISUFST and DLSU Explore Inclusive SDG-Based Local Laws on Day 2

The second day of the training workshop, “Shaping Inclusive Futures: An Action Plan for ISUFST’s SDG Policy Center,” featured compelling discussions and strategic planning for addressing gender equality and child protection policies. Hosted by the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) in collaboration with De La Salle University (DLSU) J. Robredo Institute of Governance (JMRI), the event runs from December 26 to 28 at Damires Hills Tierra Verde Leisure Farm.

The day’s sessions were headlined by Fulbright Visiting Scholar Juliene Porciuncula from North Carolina State University and Dr. Leonora Angeles, Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia. Her talk provided academic insights and practical approaches to crafting research papers for publication that address pressing issues such as teenage pregnancy, violence against women and children (VAWC), disaster risk reduction management (DRRM), and online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC). She explored data-driven solutions and policy implementation strategies using the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) Framework, the Circular Model of the Research Process, and other similar frameworks.

“We need to understand the intersectionality of these issues,” noted Dr. Angeles, emphasizing the importance of integrating laws like the Safe Spaces Act and DRRM (Disaster Risk Reduction and Management) policies into the context of women’s and children’s safety.

The sessions also included researchers led by Dr. Francisco Magno, Director of the JMRI at DLSU, sharing insights using the IAD model. They focused on translating policy concepts into actionable plans and comprehensive realities on the ground descriptions. Participants engaged in activities to refine strategies for community-based disaster management and sustainable local governance. Prof. Magno emphasized, “Effective policies begin with understanding local contexts, partnering with the stakeholders, and empowering communities.”

“This initiative exemplifies ISUFST’s commitment to bridging the gap between global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the unique realities of our local communities,” said ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr. “By addressing pressing issues such as gender equality and child protection through data-driven policies and inclusive strategies, we aim to drive meaningful change for vulnerable sectors. This effort also reinforces ISUFST’s vision of fostering equity and academic excellence through collaboration and innovation.”

The workshop, which culminates tomorrow, December 28, 2024, will finalize action plans for the March 2025 Policy Summit and the plan to install a local Policy Center, solidifying ISUFST’s leadership in inclusive governance and its vision of fostering equity through academic excellence and collaboration. ISUFST and DLSU kick off Workshop en route to SDG Women-Children Policy Summit

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), in partnership with the De La Salle University (DLSU) J. Robredo Institute of Governance, officially starts the workshop titled “Shaping Inclusive Futures: An Action Plan for ISUFST’s SDG Policy Center” this morning, December 20, at Damires Hills Tierra Verde Leisure Farm, Janiuay, Iloilo. The event, set for December 26 to 28, 2024, marks the deepening of a pivotal initiative to localize Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, focusing on gender equality and empowering women and children.

This event gathers select participants from ISUFST and DLSU to collaborate on crafting an inclusive and evidence-based framework for addressing gender and child-focused issues. The workshop serves as a key step in DLSU and ISUFST’s plan to hold a Policy Summit this March 2025 and establish a policy center dedicated to creating sustainable and equitable development pathways at the local level.

ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., CESO VI underscored the workshop’s significance in achieving meaningful progress for vulnerable sectors. “This event reflects our collective commitment to driving inclusive development and empowering women and children through localized and sustainable policies,” Dr. Siason remarked.

The day began with a presentation by Dr. Francisco Magno, who provided the rationale behind the initiative, highlighting the critical need for collaborative action to address gaps in gender equality and child protection policies. The presentation set the tone for the following discussions, emphasizing the importance of bridging global SDG frameworks with the realities of local governance.

Prof. Eddie Nuque is also set to facilitate a workshop on “Empowering Action: Developing Training and Activities for Effective Planning.” This session focuses on equipping participants with tools and methodologies to translate policy ideas into actionable programs. Prof. Nuque is expected to emphasize the importance of contextualized training approaches and strategic performance management systems, encouraging participants to leverage community-specific insights to create impactful and sustainable initiatives. His collaborative and interactive approach hopes to provide participants with hands-on strategies for capacity-building and operational planning.

The discussions will continue under the facilitation of Prof. Ian Jayson Hecita, who will guide participants through “Action Plan Roadmap for Equity: Envisioning a Policy Center for Women and Children.” Prof. Hecita’s session will delve into the nuances of creating an inclusive policy framework, emphasizing the importance of data-driven decision-making and stakeholder involvement. His facilitation hopes to encourage the group to map out strategic priorities for the proposed policy center, ensuring its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The three-day event will conclude with the policy center’s strategic direction, laying the groundwork for the subsequent sessions focused on capacity-building, planning, and monitoring mechanisms. Participants are expected to invest in the initiative, recognizing its potential to improve local governance and policy-making.

The next two days will focus on action planning, evaluation, and output presentations to refine the SDG Policy Center’s framework. Expert insights from Dr. Leonora Angeles of the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Fulbright Scholar Juliene Porciuncula of the North Carolina State University (UCSU) will also enrich the discussions. Together, participants and facilitators aim to create a clear, actionable roadmap to bring meaningful change to local communities.

This initiative, Dr. Siason said, “demonstrates ISUFST’s leadership in fostering sustainable and inclusive development, further solidifying its role as a catalyst for change in the region.” The workshop’s outcomes are expected to drive local efforts in advancing gender equality and empowering communities, aligning with the broader objectives of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. What an exhilarating week it has been at the ISUFST-hosted 2024 WV RSCUAA Sports Festival and Conference! From December 15-20, the heart of Western Visayas pulsed with the energy of 3,500 athletes competing across 42 thrilling events and 22 venues.

Together, we witnessed an unforgettable celebration of talent, teamwork, and resilience, all encapsulated in our theme: “One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports.”

A massive shoutout to the 600+ dedicated organizers from ISUFST, whose hard work and passion transformed this event into a spectacular success!

A heartfelt thank you to the 13 state universities, delegates, sponsors, and every individual who contributed to this remarkable gathering. Your commitment and spirit of camaraderie turned competition into a shared journey of growth and joy.

As the ISAT U Technobees emerged as champions for the fifth consecutive time, it was the collective achievements and friendships forged that truly defined this festival. Let’s carry forward the legacy of grit, grace, and unity as we pass the torch to the next host, Northern Iloilo State University (NISU).

A Dynasty Forged in Grit

The humid air hung heavy over the baseball field, mirroring the weight of expectation on the shoulders of the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) Baseball Team. Nine years. Nine consecutive Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) VI championships. A legacy forged in sweat, dedication, and the unwavering spirit of a program built on a foundation of excellence.

ISUFST has been joining RSCUAA VI since then but dominating the diamond began in 2014 as the Assistant Coach and trainer, Sir Weddy Bon Suerte stepped in, an alumnus and the son of a beloved figure and a legendary coach in the school’s baseball history, Hernando B. Suerte. Sir Weddy instilled in his players not just the fundamentals of the game, but a deep-rooted love for their school and a burning desire to succeed. “I was away from the institution for several years, and during that time, the team struggled to achieve victory,” he explained. “During my vacation in 2014, Papa urged me to return as assistant coach and trainer for the baseball team. I accepted his request and began gathering the players”, he added in a proudest tone. Never did he know that he would be the one to start etching the legacy in each of the diamonds the players are striking.

Coaching styles shifted over the years, and new faces joined the roster, but one constant remained—the grit, the persistent determination to win. Each victory, each championship, was evidence of their resilience and their ability to adapt and overcome challenges. The team’s dominance continued until 2019, securing a 7-peat historical victory. However, the pandemic brought a temporary halt to the RSCUAA VI.

Thus, the two-year hiatus couldn’t quench the fire within the ISUFST Baseball Team. When RSCUAA VI resumed, a new generation of players emerged, inheriting the legacy of their seniors. They carried the torch, fueled by the same passion and unwavering will to win. In 2023, they secured their eighth consecutive WV’s RSCUAA VI title, further solidifying their place in school history under the coaching style of Coach Ricky Ramos, Assistant Coach John Dave Soniso, and the unwavering leadership of Team Captain John Patrick Iquiña. But behind all those who are in the spotlight, we must not forget the unsung heroes who added a touch of success to the team—the coaching staff and trainers who had sacrificed their time to mold the team’s skills and talents.

In 2024, another change in coaching styles came and went, but the core remained still: a relentless pursuit of victory fueled by years of tradition and a shared commitment to achieving greatness. In a recently concluded WV’s RSCUAA, a nail-biting match of the championship between the Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) and the ISUFST that made the audience in awe, ISUFST again clinch another title that made a historical 𝟵-𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆—a testament that tradition and the spirit of those who came before continue to inspire and drive the team to new heights. This success was made under the leadership of Head Coach Zaldy Biñas and Asst. Coach Melchor Licera. “I am incredibly blessed and grateful to have the opportunity to guide such talented and determined players, despite my own limited experience in this sport,” Coach Zaldy humbly remarked. “I promise to do my utmost to guide them and foster a stronger bond with my players. And perhaps, with God’s grace, we will achieve the ultimate goal: a gold medal in the National SCUAA, creating another chapter in ISUFST baseball history,” he added with a victorious tone.

Now, standing on the precipice that awaits them. The National SCUAA. A league of formidable opponents, each with their own dreams of gold. They had tasted silver in the previous NSCUAA, a bittersweet achievement, a reminder that while they were champions in their region, the ultimate prize remained elusive: Gold in NSCUAA, the pinnacle of their ambition.

The pressure mounted. Could they overcome the mental and physical hurdles that lay ahead? Could they conquer the doubts that crept in, the whispers of “what if?” that echoed in their minds? The answer, as it always had been, lay within themselves. In their steadfast determination, in the strength of their brotherhood, and in the legacy of those who had sacrificed everything before them.

The road to gold is an utmost challenge, demanding every ounce of their skill, resilience, and unwavering spirit. But the ISUFST Baseball Team, fueled by years of tradition, a burning desire to succeed, and the unwavering support of their institutions, colleagues, and most especially those who sacrifice everything to mold them, is now ready to face the challenge. They were ready to write the next chapter of their legendary story, one swing, one pitch, one diamond at a time.
