AACCUP re-accredits ISUFST’s Hospitality, Tourism Management Programs

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) has successfully secured the re-accreditation of its Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (Main and Dumangas Campuses) and the Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (Main Campus) degree programs following a survey conducted from March 25-27, 2024. The re-accreditation, granted by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), is valid from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2028.

University President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr. expressed pride in the re-accreditation, highlighting it as a testament to ISUFST’s dedication to academic excellence. “This re-accreditation is a significant step towards realizing our vision of becoming a globally competitive institution. It reflects our commitment to providing high-quality education that meets international standards and prepares our students to excel in their respective fields,” said Dr. Siason.

Dean Ricardo Paborada, Jr. of the College of Management at the Main Campus added, “This re-accreditation reflects our continuous efforts to enhance our programs and facilities. We are committed to providing our students with the best possible education and preparing them for successful careers in the hospitality and tourism industries.”

Dean Michelle Pahayculay of Dumangas Campus also shared insights, stating, “Our dedication to excellence is evident in every aspect of our educational offerings. The re-accreditation process has reinforced our resolve to maintain and exceed these standards. We aim to equip our students with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in a global market.”

Additionally, the university recently received a letter of re-accreditation from AACCUP for its two graduate school doctoral programs. The letter confirmed the re-accreditation of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Ph.D. in Educational Management and Ph.D. in Educational Technology programs, following an assessment conducted from April 15 to 19, 2024. The validity of these programs extends from May 1, 2024, until April 30, 2028.

SGS Dean Stephen Jinon commented: “The re-accreditation of our Ph.D. programs in Educational Management and Educational Technology underscores our unwavering commitment to academic excellence. These programs are designed to produce leaders and innovators in education, and this recognition by AACCUP validates the quality of our offerings.”

These re-accreditations confirm the programs’ status as leading courses that equip students with the necessary skills for successful careers in hospitality, tourism, and postgraduate studies. Cross-Visit to Thailand fosters camaraderie, unity among CFAS Team

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), with the full support of President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr. and the Board of Regents, embarked on an international cross-visit to Thailand’s leading fisheries and marine biology higher education institutions (HEIs). From June 1-8, 2024, this initiative underscored ISUFST’s commitment to fostering excellence in research, leadership, and sustainable collaboration while strengthening the bonds among the CFAS team.

The weeklong cross-visit to Thailand was more than just an academic tour; it was a journey of forging and strengthening camaraderie among the CFAS team. Despite the inevitable challenges and delays of international travel, the participants displayed remarkable cooperation and mutual support. This environment of shared goals and experiences significantly enhanced the team’s unity and focus on their collective mission.

One of the key factors contributing to the strengthened camaraderie was the daily interactions and shared experiences during the visits to the HEIs. Engaging with counterparts at institutions like Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT), the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), Kasetsart University (KU), and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) allowed the team members numerous opportunities for casual conversations and deep discussions. These interactions ranged from comparing notes on organizing lecture classes and laboratory techniques to discussing the performance and needs of their students. These exchanges of ideas were not only intellectually stimulating but also fostered a sense of fellowship and mutual confidence.

As one participant noted, “The cooperation through interactions with our counterparts was excellent. I think the team is now more focused on the target goals for fisheries.” This sentiment was echoed by others who observed that the delays, challenges, and fun along the way fostered unity among the team. The exchange of ideas and strategies aimed at improving the College—the university’s flagship program—served as an excellent demonstration of fellowship and mutual confidence.

Another participant shared, “As a relatively new member of the CFAS family, this was an opportunity for me to develop closer fellowship and unity with other faculty despite our diverse expertise, personalities, and preferences.” This experience of bonding over shared goals and experiences was crucial for new and seasoned faculty members alike.

The camaraderie was further strengthened by the shared adventures outside the academic environment. Exploring historic sites, dining at local restaurants, and navigating public transportation together allowed the team to bond over new experiences. These moments of relaxation and enjoyment amidst their busy schedules helped break down any professional barriers, allowing genuine friendships and trust to develop. “Mutual trust and friendship among the team were strengthened as we spent a lot of time together, sharing insights and experiences,” noted another participant.

The cross-visit also provided practical learning experiences that enhanced the team’s professional knowledge. One participant highlighted, “During the cross visits in Thailand, I learned a lot, like how to identify the male and female in fish species and how to process the eggs for hatching.” Such hands-on experiences were invaluable for the participants, adding depth to their professional skills and knowledge.

The unity and camaraderie developed during this cross-visit were evident in how the team approached each institution’s programs and research initiatives. The collective focus on learning and adapting best practices from the Thai HEIs demonstrated the team’s commitment to enhancing ISUFST’s educational and research capabilities. The support and encouragement they provided each other during presentations and discussions highlighted the strong team spirit that had been cultivated.

ISUFST leaders attend Times Higher Education Congress in Thailand

Three top executives from Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) participated in the Times Higher Education Global Sustainable Development Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, from June 10 to 13, 2024. They were Dr. Joan Belga, VP of Academic Affairs; Dr. Johnny Dolor, VP of Administrative Affairs; and Dr. Jeanette G. Bayona, Director of the Office of International Affairs and Linkages.

The Times Higher Education Global Sustainable Development Congress serves as a platform for global collaboration, bringing together educational institutions and businesses. Its primary goal is to steer the focus toward tangible outcomes in education, research, innovation, and outreach initiatives that tackle sustainability issues.

ISUFST was part of the delegation of Philippine higher education institutions led by Commissioner Dr. Ethel Agnes P. Valenzuela and Atty. Lilly Milla, OIC Executive Director of CHED. This delegation provided a valuable opportunity to discuss with peers from various sectors, including higher education, government, and civil society. These discussions focused on collaborative leadership and implementing systemic reforms to expedite progress toward common sustainability objectives.

ISUFST President Siason inspires WVSU Graduates as Commencement Speaker

As the graduates of West Visayas State University (WVSU) gathered at the WVSU Cultural Center this past Thursday, June 6, they were met with not just the pomp and circumstance of their commencement exercises but also with powerful words from a distinguished alumnus, Dr. Nordy D. Siason, Jr. The ISUFST President, known for his journey from a simple barrio to a leading educational figure, delivered a 30-minute commencement speech that resonated deeply with the class of 2024, emphasizing the profound impact of “alkansiya” and “Scholarship for Service.”

Dr. Siason, who began his storied academic and professional journey at WVSU, has made significant strides in education. He marked his tenure with achievements like a 100% Certificate of Program Compliance for all programs at ISUFST and elevating the school to university status. His personal and professional narratives blend into a tapestry of resilience and commitment, characteristics he aimed to instill in the new graduates.

The theme of his speech, “alkansiya,” metaphorically represented the value of saving and passing on knowledge and experiences. Drawing on personal anecdotes from his youth and his rise through academic and professional ranks, Dr. Siason spoke candidly about the importance of character and competence. He argued that in the real world, “knowledge is useless, even dangerous, if not coupled with virtues.”

“Life has taught me that the true wealth of education is not measured by the money it brings, but by the lives it changes,” Dr. Siason expressed, emphasizing the transformative power of education. He challenged the graduates to apply their knowledge ethically and effectively to better themselves and society. He noted that true wisdom lies not just in acquiring knowledge but in using it for good, a sentiment that aligns with Theodore Roosevelt’s belief that “Knowledge without character is dangerous; character without knowledge is ineffective.”

Addressing graduates from various colleges, Dr. Siason tailored his message to fit the unique contributions each could make. He outlined how each graduate’s “Scholarship for Service” should manifest, urging them to use their skills to challenge the status quo, promote social justice, and innovate in ways that do not widen societal gaps.

Echoing the ideals of service, Dr. Siason reminded the graduates, “As you step out into the world, remember, it is not just your duty but your privilege to lift others as you climb. This is the essence of being a true-blue Taga-West.”

The message of “Scholarship for Service” resonated as Dr. Siason called on the graduates to strive for personal success and leverage their capabilities for the broader good of society. ISUFST visits SEAFDEC Thailand to explore collab prospects

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) delegation visited this Tuesday, June 4, 2024, the Training Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC-TD) in Phra Samut Chedi District, Samut Prakan, Thailand. This visit is part of ISUFST’s initiative to establish partnerships with leading institutions in fisheries and marine sciences.

The ISUFST team was welcomed by Mr. Longpathai Saraphaivanich, Head of the Training and Information Section, and his team. The visit began with an information exchange highlighting the mandates, thrusts, and services of both institutions. It was followed by a thorough exploration of SEAFDEC-TD’s training areas, equipment, facilities, exhibits, and ship.

“We hope this partnership will continue to grow,” Mr. Saraphaivanich remarked. “Both institutions have much to offer regarding resources and expertise, and I believe we can achieve great things together.”

Established in 1968 and formally operating since 1970, SEAFDEC aims to develop modern fishery technologies and address workforce shortages in marine capture fisheries in Southeast Asia. SEAFDEC-TD is supported by the Government of Thailand and other donor governments, with Japan being the most generous contributor.

The visit gave ISUFST faculty and administrators valuable insights into SEAFDEC-TD’s advanced fishery technologies and training programs. Dr. Nopporn Manjit, a Marine Fisheries Senior Researcher, emphasized the benefits of collaboration, stating, “Sharing our knowledge and technology with ISUFST will not only enhance their capabilities but also contribute to the sustainable development of fisheries in Southeast Asia.”

Dr. Rolindo Demo-os, Dean of CFAS, appreciated the opportunity to learn from SEAFDEC-TD. “This visit is crucial in our efforts to elevate ISUFST’s status as a Center of Excellence in Fisheries,” he noted. “We are particularly interested in their research agendas and innovative practices, which we hope to integrate into our programs.”

The ISUFST delegation, composed of experts in marine fisheries, aquaculture, post-harvest and fish processing, fish biochemistry, and marine engineering, reflected positively on the visit. They recognized the significance of technology transfer and research collaboration in enhancing their educational and research programs.

Dr. Jescel Bito-onon, Director of the Research and Development Office at ISUFST, highlighted the visit’s importance for future research initiatives. “Understanding SEAFDEC-TD’s methodologies and best practices will enable us to develop more effective research projects and improve our overall academic offerings,” she said. “This visit underscores the importance of international collaboration in advancing our technological capabilities and achieving sustainability in fisheries,” remarked Dr. Roy Villanueva, an aquaculture specialist.

Dr. Dennis Gomez, the team leader, expressed his optimism about the potential collaboration, stating, “The insights and knowledge we gained from SEAFDEC-TD are invaluable. We look forward to building a strong partnership that will drive innovation and excellence in our fisheries programs.”

Dr. Herman Lagon, Director of Public Affairs, Marketing, and Communication at ISUFST, concluded, “By engaging with SEAFDEC-TD and other leading institutions, we are not just aiming for accreditation; we are striving for excellence that resonates globally. The visit to SEAFDEC-TD is part of a broader initiative that includes engagements with other prominent institutions in Thailand, such as Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT), Kasetsart University, and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Supported by the ISUFST Board of Regents, led by CHED Chairman Popoy de Vera and University President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., this internationalization initiative aims to document critical programs, curricula, and initiatives, assess research agendas, and identify actionable practices for potential adaptation at ISUFST.

The ISUFST delegation for this International Cross Visit to Thailand includes a diverse group of experts, each with specific roles to maximize the visit’s benefits. Besides Dr. Gomez, Dr. Demo-os, Dr. Villanueva, Dr. Bito-onon, and Dr. Lagon, the team includes Dr. Quin Clarito, a marine fisheries specialist; Dr. Lou Magbanua, a social science expert; Prof. Cjay Soliven, a post-harvest and fish processing specialist; Prof. Ma. Roelle Silva, a fish biochemistry and microbiology expert; and Dr. Edgar Hortillosa, a marine fisheries and mangrove ecosystems specialist. Prof. Jerry B. Bedonia and Engr. Ermie V. Bedia round out the ISUFST team with specializations in ichthyology, and marine and mechanical engineering. Partner-institution DOST Region VI’s Ms. Juafe N. Abareles and Ms. Desiree Faith N. Sy also joined the cross-visit, making the number of delegates 14.

RMUTT confirms renewal of partnership with Thailand’s Rajamangala University

Bangkok, Thailand, June 3, 2024 – The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) delegation received a significant commitment from Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT) to renew their partnership during a visit coinciding with the celebration of Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana’s birthday.

“We shall definitely renew our collaboration officially,” announced Assist. Prof. Dr. Lalita Siriwattananon, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology at RMUTT. Her statement came during a meeting this Monday, June 3, with the ISUFST delegation, which includes 12 faculty and administrators from the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CFAS) and two representatives from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region VI Office.

Previously, ISUFST and RMUTT had a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that lapsed with limited progress due to various concerns, including the pandemic. Dr. Lalita expressed optimism about the renewed partnership, stating, “I can feel that we shall have a stronger and more palpable partnership, both having new management and with the level of more focused interaction that we are now having.”

The ISUFST delegation visited RMUTT’s agriculture and fisheries facilities and conducted bilateral orientation and exploratory talks. Team leader Dr. Dennis Gomez and CFAS Dean Dr. Rolindo Demo-os introduced ISUFST and its fisheries program to its Thai counterparts. It was then followed by the more engaging colloquia that encompass possibilities for collaboration.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Pimpan Pimonrat, Assistant Dean for International Relations, reaffirmed RMUTT’s commitment to a more official collaboration, particularly stressing academic and research partnerships. She emphasized her office’s willingness to assist potential teacher and student exchanges in agriculture technology, especially in animal husbandry and aquaculture fisheries.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Boontarika Thongdonphum, Deputy Director of the Office of Academic Resources and Information Technology and Fisheries lecturer, promised to maintain communications among faculty members to develop specific programs that enhance academic services for both institutions.”

The visit concluded with an exchange of tokens and hopes for an MOU renewal ceremony in the near future, symbolizing the shared commitment to this partnership.

ISUFST bags multiple awards at 3rd Regional Quality Awards 2024

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) received five prestigious awards at the 3rd Regional Quality Awards 2024, held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at Urdaneta Hall, University of San Agustin, Gen. Luna St., Iloilo City. This marks the first time in three years that ISUFST has been recognized with such a number of institutional regional honors, underscoring its significant achievements in the field of education.

The awards received by ISUFST include the SUC with 100% Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) for Undergraduate Programs, Model Implementer: Scholarships for Instructors’ Knowledge Advancement Program (SIKAP), Certificate of Recognition for the institution’s support of CHEDRO VI, Award for Excellence in Indigenous Peoples (IP) Education, and Award for Excellence in Internationalization Initiatives. These accolades highlight the university’s commitment to excellence and its efforts to enhance educational standards and outreach.

The event began with welcome remarks from Dr. Raul C. Alvarez, Jr., Director of CHED Regional Office VI. Dr. Alvarez emphasized the collective effort required for success, “Today’s recognition is a testament to the power of collaboration and unity. Together, we can elevate higher education to unprecedented heights, ensuring quality and excellence for all.” His message set the tone for the ceremony, which celebrated the accomplishments of various institutions in Western Visayas.

Atty. Cinderella Filipina S. Among these, ISUFST is one of the few institutions that stood out for its significant contributions and exemplary performance.

ISUFST leads the charge in Localizing SDGs; Women, Children Empowerment

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) successfully conducted the Localizing SDG, Women, and Children Empowerment Orientation and Briefing this Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Park Inn by Radisson, Diversion Road, Mandurriao, Iloilo City. This day-long event attracted numerous representatives from the academe, provincial agencies, and local government units (LGUs) across Iloilo’s five congressional districts.

Academic participants included delegates from West Visayas State University, Iloilo Science and Technology University, Northern Iloilo State University, University of the Philippines Visayas, and University of San Agustin. Representatives from provincial agencies were predominantly from municipal social work, gender and development, and social planning departments. The Iloilo Provincial Government was also represented by its entire Technical Working Group (TWG) executives. Notable attendees included San Enrique Mayor Rosario Mediatrix Fernandez and Carles Mayor Siegfredo Betita.

The project aims to assess the local implementation of national policies on women and children, promote their rights, and position Iloilo as a Gender and Development Local Learning Hub. It focuses on generating baseline knowledge, improving and sustaining women’s and children’s welfare and rights, and integrating the SDGs into the curriculum and community engagement among local academics and leaders.

The morning was dedicated to discussing the initiative’s depth and breadth. In the afternoon, participants engaged in a workshop on identifying and collecting localized data, with inputs presented during the plenary session.

Ms. Alma Ravena, co-chairperson of the Provincial Gender and Development (GAD) Council and representative of Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., highlighted critical issues. “Three out of ten children can’t read,” she noted, underscoring the need for improved literacy and numeracy. She acknowledged the initiative’s support for creating safe spaces, addressing bullying in schools, and tackling teen pregnancy and health issues among young mothers. Ravena conveyed the provincial government’s full backing for ISUFST’s efforts, stating, “We will be backing you up.”

San Enrique Mayor Rosario Mediatrix Fernandez addressed the lack of empowerment among women, especially in less educated and remote families. “This is the time to make a more concerted effort. We must work for gender inclusivity and equality. If we create empowered women, we create empowered children and an empowered society,” she asserted.

Dr. Francisco Magno, the resource speaker and workshop facilitator, elaborated on the program’s outcomes and the importance of being globally aware and competitive while addressing local needs. He emphasized that targeting women and children ensures inclusive and sustainable societal progress.

ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason Jr. expressed gratitude to the participants and experts from De La Salle University and the Office of Senator Risa Hontiveros, a prime supporter of the initiative. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to sustaining the project, highlighting its relevance to local governance and social justice, a guiding principle of ISUFST. “This initiative underscores our dedication to fostering local partnerships and enhancing the welfare of women and children,” he said.

Workshop facilitator Prof. Eddie Nuque emphasized ISUFST’s role as a beacon of knowledge and action, committed to the SDGs and societal transformation. He stressed the value of participant involvement from LGUs and the academe. “Your participation is invaluable, as you know your locale best. The data you provide are crucial to the process,” he remarked.
