ISUFST holds First-ever Ocular visit in Japan for Potential Student Internship

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), through Dumangas Campus College of Hospitality Management Dean Michelle Pahayculay, successfully completed a three-day Host Training Establishment (HTE) Ocular and Site Visit for the Student Internship Abroad Program (SIAP) of its Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) students. This marks the first time of its kind that ISUFST has conducted such a visit in line with CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 10, series of 2023.

The visit took place at Goushigaisha Mifune-Ikeuno Mifune, Chita, Aichi, Japan, with Dr. Pahayculay warmly welcomed by Mr. Ota Matasaka, owner of Aichi International Education Center (AIEC), Mr. Iida Ideyuki, Hotel President, Ms. Mini Miso, Intern Coordinator, and Ms. Irish Detablan, AIEC Staff and Language Instructor. The center is now the newest international linkage partner for the university’s hospitality internship program.

During the visit, a courtesy call was made to AIEC, where Dr. Pahayculay met with the principal, staff, and students to discuss potential collaboration opportunities. The primary objective of the ocular visit was to evaluate the facilities, operations, and overall environment of the training establishment to ensure it meets the educational and practical needs of ISUFST students. This evaluation is crucial in ensuring a safe and enriching internship experience abroad, which, if all preparations proceed smoothly, could be made available to BSHM students before the year ends.

‘Mangingisda Ako, Una ang Seguridad Ko’ Workshop Empowers Banate Bay Fisherfolk

Over 100 fisherfolk from the Municipality of Banate took part in the extension program titled “Mangingisda Ako, Una ang Seguridad Ko”, held on September 13, 2024, at the Agriculture Building in Banate.

The training focused on safe navigation, collision regulations, and coastal resource management, aiming to enhance both the safety and environmental awareness of the local fishing community.

The initiative was led by Dr. Shiela Picpican, with Dr. Lou Magbanua and Dr. Quin Clarito serving as resource persons. They shared their expertise on maritime safety and sustainable coastal practices. They also stressed the importance of preventing illegal fishing activities and promoting sustainable fishing technologies.

In his opening message, Banate Mayor Peter Paul Gonzales highlighted the importance of the training for the livelihood and safety of fisherfolk.
“Programs like these are vital in safeguarding the lives of our fisherfolk while promoting the sustainable use of our coastal resources,” he said.

Vice Mayor Filemon Iran echoed his support, emphasizing the need for municipal ordinances on safe navigation and resource protection. He expressed hope for the establishment of long-term policies that would benefit the fishing community and ensure environmental stewardship.

Dr. Joana Paula B. Biñas, Director for Extension Services and Development at the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), reinforced the university’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
“Our research-driven and impactful extension projects are aligned with these global goals. This training is part of our efforts to empower fisherfolk and promote sustainable fishing practices,” she said.

The training covered essential topics, including navigation rules, the use of navigational aids, communication and lookout skills, and marine environmental protection. Fisherfolk were also educated on sustainable fishing practices to ensure the long-term preservation of Banate Bay’s resources.

This event marked the third phase of the “Mangingisda Ako” project, which aims to train all 957 registered fisherfolk in Banate. The project is expected to significantly improve the safety, productivity, and environmental awareness of the local fishing community.

ISUFST Guidance Counselor leads Three Talks on Mental Well-being

Dr. Lydia Villanueva-Araneta, a guidance counselor at the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), recently delivered three separate talks addressing critical mental health issues, reinforcing the university’s commitment to community engagement, particularly in fostering psychological wellness among the youth.

Her most recent speaking engagement took place at St. Paul School, Barotac Nuevo, on September 13, 2024, where she was invited as the guest speaker during a symposium on Mental Health and Overall Well-being. The event was sponsored by SPSBN Batch 1984 in celebration of their 40th year since high school graduation. During the talk, Dr. Villanueva-Araneta discussed mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and suicide, underscoring the importance of raising awareness on these issues within the school setting. She expressed her gratitude for the warm response from the students, stating, “My heart is full with so much gratitude and joy. You all inspire me to continue doing what I love to do—raising awareness and reaching out to those in need.”

Earlier this year, Dr. Villanueva-Araneta also participated in two significant community-focused events. The first was a talk at St. Paul University Iloilo (SPUI), where she discussed school bullying and its impact on students’ mental health. She then took part in the 2024 Regional Youth Celebration, where she addressed anxiety and depression, aiming to equip young people with the tools to cope with these widespread issues.

To note, the guidance counselors and staff of ISUFST have been conducting similar mental health engagements for the past years upon requests of different institutions. This reflects the institution’s strong commitment to youth mental health and well-being. ISUFST and DepEd Schools Division Office of Passi City strengthen Suicide Prevention Workshop

In a significant step toward promoting mental wellness and suicide prevention, the DepEd Schools Division Office (SDO) of Passi City partnered with the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) to conduct a Suicide Prevention Seminar-Workshop. Held yesterday, September 12, 2024, at the Nine Suite Business Hotel in Passi City, the seminar was part of the Katatagan Program, which champions mental health advocacy across the city’s schools. The initiative is aligned with ISUFST’s commitment to community involvement and regional development, while supporting the mental health thrust of Cong. Ferjenil Biron, a member of the university’s Board of Regents.

Registered guidance counselor Dr. Herman Lagon, ISUFST’s Director of Public Affairs, Marketing, and Media Communications Office (PAMMCO), was the resource speaker and facilitator. His presentation, titled “Suicide Prevention: Strengthening Mental Health in Schools,” focused on equipping educators with the necessary tools to identify and address suicide risk factors among students. Dr. Lagon emphasized the importance of early intervention, defining key terms like suicide ideation, attempt, and postvention, and underscoring the value of a supportive school environment. “We must change the narrative on suicide by fostering open conversations and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health,” Lagon said during his talk, which extended beyond the scheduled time due to the relevance and interest of the audience.

Dr. Ma. Roselyn Palcat, Passi City Schools Division Superintendent, hailed the collaboration, stating, “The Katatagan Program is already integrated into our schools’ guidance programs, using modules that have proven effective in managing mental wellness among our learners.” She further stressed the success of their division’s initiatives, sharing that their Katatagan story had been featured across Panay and Guimaras and would soon be shared with divisions in Negros Occidental.

The seminar was also supported by Atty. Fevi Fanco, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, who remarked, “We must take care of ourselves so that we can take care of others, becoming more effective instruments of change.” University President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., who was formerly a DepEd Superintendent himself, also reaffirmed ISUFST’s commitment to DepEd Passi City, stating, “This partnership aligns with ISUFST’s thrust for community involvement and mental wellness, reinforcing our shared mission to promote mental health and prevent suicide in our schools and communities.”

Participants, including elementary and high school heads, curriculum personnel, and operations staff, actively engaged in identifying warning signs of suicidal behavior and practiced crisis intervention approaches through case scenarios and role-playing exercises. The highlight of the event are the mini workshops and the lively sharing of insights in the plenary facilitated in by the resource speaker.

After the six-hour seminar-workshop on suicide prevention and mental wellness, the participants proceeded with an in-depth review on the Rapid HEEEADSSS (Home, Education, Employment, Eating, Activities, Drug Use, Sexuality, Suicide, Safety, and Spirituality) Assessment, led by Grace Farah Panes, Nurse II at SDO Passi City.

ISUFST athletes shine in National ROTC Games

INDANG, Cavite— Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) athletes made a remarkable showing at the Philippine ROTC Games National Finals held from August 18-24, 2024. Competing in the Arnis Men’s and Women’s categories, the ISUFST delegation secured two silver medals and one bronze, highlighting their skill and dedication.

Sophomore Bachelor of Industrial Technology (BIT) student Mark Vincent Asumbra led the charge for ISUFST, clinching silver medals in both the Non-Traditional Competition and the Padded Stick Competition (53kg below). Senior Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) standout Rhea Grace Omison added to the medal tally by earning a bronze medal in the Live Stick Competition (63kg below), showcasing the university’s prowess in the national arena.

The athletes expressed their satisfaction with their performance, emphasizing that representing ISUFST was a privilege, regardless of the competition’s outcome. They shared that the entire process, from preparation to competition, was an honor and a fulfilling experience.

Clariesol Belo, the team leader of the ISUFST delegation, extended her support and encouragement to the athletes. She affirmed, “Our athletes have shown incredible dedication and spirit, and while we celebrate their achievements today, we are committed to doing even better in the next games. This is just the beginning of more victories to come.”

ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., echoed this sentiment, offering his support and pride for the team. “The success of our athletes in the ROTC Games is a testament to their hard work and determination. We are incredibly proud of them for bringing honor to ISUFST and for representing the Visayas region with such excellence,” Dr. Siason said.

Aside from Asumbra and Omison, the following also bravely represented ISUFST: Roperly Mae Bangero and Japhet Palma for the Armis Women category; Rennier Soberano for the Arnis Men’s category; Ben Araneta, Ismael Martirez, and James Kenneth Buenacosa in the Taekwondo Men’s division; and Marlie Diopenes in the Women’s division. The team is coached by Sol Denamarca, Jade Marie Dimzon, and Belo.

ISUFST and Municipality of San Enrique Liga ng mga Barangay stamp MOA for Technology Transfer Initiative

San Enrique, Iloilo–A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed on the morning of Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the Municipal Hall of San Enrique. This marks a significant collaboration between the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) and the Liga ng Mga Barangay of San Enrique town. The partnership is set to drive the TechKnow Transfer Extension Program, a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing the technological capabilities of the town’s barangay officials.

ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., and Liga ng Mga Barangay-San Enrique President Hon. Gian Carlo Niño Fernandez formalized the MOA. Key officials and staff from ISUFST and the San Enrique Local Government Unit (LGU), including the 28 barangay captains of San Enrique, attended the ceremony.

Representing ISUFST at the event were TechKnow Transfer Extension Project Leader Prof. Wenda Panes, Legal Counsel Atty. Joey Mondero, PAMMCO Director Dr. Herman Lagon, International Affairs and Linkages Coordinator Dr. Analiza Gullos-Alingalan, and Chairperson of Instruction Dr. Genevieve Garrido, alongside faculty and staff from the San Enrique Campus.

Vice Mayor Ernesto Palomado, standing in for Mayor Rosario Mediatrix Fernandez, who happens to be on official travel, expressed the LGU’s strong support for the program. “This agreement is our legacy to the present and the next generation,” Hon. Palomado stated.

The TechKnow Transfer Extension Program includes the “Computer Utilization and Technology Transfer Endeavors (CompUTTE)” project, which seeks to address the digital literacy gap among barangay officials through ICT-related training sessions and technology transfers.

Prof. Wenda Panes, a leading professor from ISUFST’s College of Computer Studies (CCS), highlighted the program’s innovative components, including the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) Management System, Barangay Information Management System (BIMS), TapME Android-based emergency alert application, Immunization Information System (IIS), Disaster Preparedness App “e-Bakwit,” and the Hands-free Attendance Archive Using QR Code.

Hon. Gian Carlo Niño Fernandez lauded ISUFST’s efforts: “Computerization and digitalization are the ways forward. We deeply appreciate ISUFST for responding to our call. We began with our secretaries, treasurers, and staff. We are extending these advancements to the rest of our community leaders, ensuring everyone is equipped for the digital present and networked future.”

Dr. Siason reaffirmed ISUFST’s commitment to the partnership: “We are committed to doing everything in our power to support the LGU of San Enrique. I will ensure that, by the end of my term, the San Enrique campus reaches its full potential to serve the municipality and its community.” He also underscored the ongoing development of multi-million peso projects at the San Enrique campus to serve the locality better and stressed that “all poor but deserving and qualified applicants from San Enrique and nearby areas must be taken care of by the ISUFST San Enrique campus.”

This partnership marks another first for ISUFST, showcasing the university’s dedication to fostering community collaboration and advancing technological literacy across the region. As Prof. Panes noted, this initiative is another first for the university; it is a unique and groundbreaking effort that sets a new standard for community engagement and technology transfer in the region.

The seven-year program aims to empower barangay officials with the necessary skills and tools to improve governance and service delivery through ICT. The long-term training and technology integration package will cover, among others, essential computer operations, word processing, electronic spreadsheets, database utilization, presentation software, and internet navigation, all tailored to the specific needs of the San Enrique barangays.

14 ISUFST Faculty and Students Immerse at Indonesia’s University of Brawijaya

As part of its ongoing internationalization initiative, Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) has sent a delegation of 14 faculty members and students to participate in a week-long immersion program at the University of Brawijaya (UB) in Indonesia. The program, which commenced on August 18 and will conclude on August 24, 2024, aims to enhance the global competencies of the participants, exposing them to international academic standards and cultural practices.

The delegation comprises seven faculty members and nine students from different departments of ISUFST. Four faculty members from the College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT)—Dr. Benjamin Cornelio, Jr., Dr. Noel Caliston, Dr. Renante Diamante, and Instr. Alex Facelo, Jr.—are joined by four Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) students: Nikki Muriel Buensuceso, Vincent Pabilona, Nazarrio Benjamin Sobida, Claine Reniva, and Kent Bryan Belandres. Simultaneously, faculty members from the College of Agriculture (COA)—Instructor Rodelyn Caro and Instr. Jiesel Cantorna—and Dr. Jeanette Bayona of the Office of International Affairs and Linkages are leading three Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students: Kylah Peralta and Faith Benadero.

Each group is engaged in a distinct set of activities tailored to their academic disciplines. The CICT faculty and students are focused on workshops, lectures, and research collaborations that explore the latest developments in information technology. These sessions are designed to provide insights into emerging technologies and innovative practices, which participants can bring back to ISUFST to enhance the university’s ICT programs.

Meanwhile, the COA participants are deeply involved in agricultural studies, attending lectures, participating in field visits, and collaborating on research projects that address regional agricultural challenges and innovations. This immersion offers a unique opportunity for faculty and students to learn about advanced agricultural techniques and practices that can be applied to enhance productivity and sustainability in the Philippines.

Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., President of ISUFST, expressed his support for this international initiative, stating, “This immersion program is a crucial step in our commitment to align ISUFST with global standards. I encourage our faculty and students to maximize this experience, absorb as much knowledge as possible, and share these valuable insights with the ISUFST community upon their return.”

The immersion program not only strengthens ISUFST’s partnerships with international institutions like the University of Brawijaya but also contributes to the university’s mission of producing globally competitive graduates. The faculty and students involved are expected to return to the Philippines on August 24, 2024, equipped with new knowledge and experiences that will benefit both their personal development and the broader academic community at ISUFST. ISUFST celebrates ASEAN 57TH Anniversary with Campus-Wide Events

With an array of events spread among its five campuses, each meant to uphold the values and aspirations of ASEAN integration, the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) observed the 57th ASEAN founding anniversary throughout August 2024. These student- and faculty-led activities ranged from competitions to cultural events to educational talks and sought to improve knowledge of ASEAN’s part in promoting regional unity and resilience.

Starting August 12 and 19 with morning flag ceremonies including ASEAN themes, professors and staff members proudly wore traditional ASEAN costumes. Short presentations stressing the history and relevance of ASEAN, cultural dances, and the ASEAN hymn were part of these festivities. These events underlined the need for ASEAN integration and directly responded to the demand of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to include ASEAN courses in the syllabus.

On August 16, the Main Campus Tiwi and Poblacion Sites held contests, presentations, and displays, among other activities. One of the day’s highlights was a keynote address by Dr. Herman Lagon, former Director of International Affairs and Linkages, who spoke on “Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience.” Dr. Lagon emphasized the importance of an ASEAN mindset: “Thinking ASEAN and thinking internationally is no longer optional—it’s inevitable. Otherwise, you will soon become obsolete, incompetent, clueless, and irrelevant.”

Adding further depth to the event, Dr. Rejie Palmos from the Center for Peace Education at West Visayas State University (WVSU) also addressed the Dingle Campus community, discussing the role of Peace Education within the ASEAN framework. Dr. Palmos highlighted that fostering peace and understanding among ASEAN nations is critical for regional stability and development, urging students and faculty alike to become advocates for peace in their daily interactions.

Dr. Johnny Dolor, Vice President for Administration and Finance, further underscored the significance of ASEAN integration during the flag rites in the Tiwi Site: “Our connection as ASEAN nations lies not only in our geographical proximity but in our shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous region.” This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Joan Belga, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who highlighted the role of education in fostering ASEAN unity: “By embracing ASEAN ideals, we open doors to cross-cultural learning and collaboration, which are essential for our students to thrive in a globalized world.”

University President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., a staunch advocate for internationalization, stressed the importance of ASEAN celebrations in building a deeper understanding of regional cooperation. “ASEAN is more than just a political and economic bloc; it is a community bound by common ideals of peace, cooperation, and mutual respect,” Dr. Siason remarked. “At ISUFST, we are committed to embedding these values in our educational framework.”

In addition to these major events, teachers across all campuses integrated ASEAN themes and lessons into their respective subjects throughout the month. This integration aligns with the directive of CHED and the UN SDGs to support and disseminate the lessons of ASEAN integration and its value to the region.

The Dumangas Campus hosted a vibrant parade of colors, an ASEAN runway show, quiz bowls, exhibits, and essay writing contests. The celebration at the San Enrique Campus included a flag-raising ceremony, a meaningful input from guest speaker Mr. Marvin P. Subrida, and a competition for the best ASEAN attire. The Dingle Campus added a unique flavor to the festivities, with traditional games like sepak takraw and sack races, among others, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of ASEAN countries.

Meanwhile, the Main Campus Tiwi Site was abuzz with an ASEAN Bazaar, a vibrant showcase of booths from different ASEAN nations. This special occasion promoted cultural interaction and offered a forum for cross-cultural learning and cooperation. A highlight of the festival, the ASEAN Runway event brought academics, staff, and students together for a fashion show featuring traditional attire from ASEAN nations.

Participants in all these events were motivated by perceptive messages from university officials, chosen academics, school heads, and student leaders, who all stressed the need to embrace ASEAN connectedness and resilience in their respective programs.

ISUFST’s commemoration of ASEAN’s 57th anniversary provided a potent forum for reaffirming the university’s relentless dedication to internationalization and strengthening the close solidarity among its students throughout August. Another First, Historic Collaboration for Innovation and Research:

On August 15, 2024, a significant milestone was achieved with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Iloilo Provincial Government and Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST). The MOA establishes a Research Development and Innovations Partnership and initiates a groundbreaking research project on the induced spawning of African catfish using alternative sources of pituitary glands. Dr. Roy C. Villanueva leads the project, with research specialist Mr. Eli Gene Tisuela supporting the initiative. The signing ceremony, held at Casa Real’s Function Room A, saw Iloilo Provincial Administrator Dr. Raul Bañas representing the provincial government and University President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr. representing ISUFST.
